The Latest Titanic Commutator No. 191 is Here!

TC 191

The feature story covers the grand opening on April 8, 2010 in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee of the newest Titanic Museum Attraction that was greeted by an enthusiastic and overflowing crowd. Although rain was falling, as far as the eye could see a colorful ocean of umbrellas filled the surrounding parking lot, entertainment platform and ship. At the front of the stage were special guests––collectors and contributors of both Branson and Pigeon Forge museums, including yours truly, descendents of family members of Titanic passengers, media from all the networks including live radio programming and the Internet.

Standing on “Titanic's” imposing bow was “Captain Smith” who christened the ship with champagne. Bagpipers played and singers sang the national anthem at the raising of the American flag on Titanic's foremast. After the official ceremonies ended, the cast of “Titanic, the Musical” sang selections followed by free evening concerts to crowds that overflowed onto the sidewalks and nearby properties. Traffic on the well-traveled Parkway through Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg and the Smoky Mountains National Park came to a halt when Saturday’s fireworks display choreographed to James Cameron’s Titanic movie theme, the haunting, “My Heart Will Go On” played as the night sky lit up for miles around.

The Titanic Commutator No. 190

TC190

This issue includes the conclusion of Oceanic III, The Unfinished Dream by Timothy Trower, the result of years of research to bring her story to date. Engineering in September 1952 summed it up: “Unfortunately, due to the depressed state of shipping at the time, the construction of the vessel had not gone very far before it was brought to a halt. As a result, Queen’s Island was denied the honour of building the first vessel to have a length of 1,000 feet and completing what would have been truly a remarkable achievement in the sphere of shipbuilding and marine engineering. Nevertheless, the fact that such a bold design was ever contemplated suffices to prove how far Messrs. Harland and Wolff had by then progressed along the path of Diesel engine development for marine propulsion.”

TITANIC

AND LIVERPOOL

by Alan Scarth

If you had been astern of Titanic on that fateful night in 1912, the last word to flash before your eyes as the great ship plunged beneath the waves would have been “Liverpool.” The ship’s loss, a national and international tragedy was indeed, a tragedy for the city whose connection with the disaster is often overlooked by Southampton and Belfast. This fascinating book highlights for the first time the extraordinary stories that link Britain’s pre-eminent port city with its most famous maritime loss. Drawing on material from the White Star Line archives, the extensive holdings of the Merseyside Maritime Museum and a variety of historical sources, the author, one of the curatorial staff at Merseyside Maritime Museum since 1982, unearths the back story of key characters with Liverpool locales. Many of Titanic’s officers and crew were either from Liverpool or had strong links with the port; the ship’s owners were based in the city and many of the most colorful tales to emerge from the disaster relate to Liverpool people. Titanic and Liverpool casts a new light on a familiar story and establishes the clear relationship between the doomed ship and her home port.

TITANIC The Last Survivor

TITANIC The Last Survivor

The life of Millvina Dean

By Anthony Cunningham & Sheila Jemima, with Millvina Dean

The book's Introduction dated October 2008 was written by Millvina Dean who said, "The Titanic meant very little to me at the time. Nobody seemed to talk about it very much and the fact that my father had died on the ship didn't really make a huge impression on me. After all, what was the Titanic to me? It didn't seem to have any bearing on my world at all. That I had been the youngest survivor of the disaster meant even less! My mother told me the facts and that was that."
